A1 CHALLENGE HOST UCU LADY CANONS IN A GAME WHICH BRINGS THE 2011-12 SEASON TO AN END.

The two teams have had contrasting fortunes this season and find themselves fighting for different reasons.

One of them is seeking to make a statement prior to the play-offs and the other is seeking to spoil the party as they seek to rebuild for the 2012-13 season.

A1 Challenge host the Lady Canons who have had a 100% start to the second round of the league.

Barely a week ago, they disposed off KCC Leopards handing them their first loss in the season 66:59, and getting their sweet revenge, having lost to KCC in the first round 62:67. This win see's the Lady Canons top the table with 37 points and KCC Leopards drop to number two on the table with the same points.

I know this may be far fetched but i just have to say this, the FUBA 2011-12 season has been quite a spectacle to the average fan, from fortfeits, to attempted forfeits, to player-fan flexing, to lymphatic win-loss columns to mention but afew.

Speaking of lymphatic win-loss columns, just last week saw UCU Canons thump Charging Rhino's sending them back to DIV II in style 91:41. And then KIU Rangers offense went all out firing their arsenal at the Makerere Cubs 71:7, i mean if these stats are not appaling then i do not know what is.

The KIU-Mak Cubs game say history made. It was the first time since the inception of the womens league that a team has failed to score double figures, talk about making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Needless to say that the Mak Cubs are yet to win a game in the league.

Turning our attention to the Sunday 4pm kick off, call it what you want to, but A1 Challenge host the Lady Canons seeking revenge for just about everything. Last seasons play-off finals defeat and the first round loss, which i guess will be a little fresh in the players minds.

Lady Canons whose Akinyi Lorraine, Maureen Amoding, Mbone Brenda and Purity Adhiambo were crucial in bringing KCC Leopards down-to-earth, will be at it again. This time against the defence of Bazira Lizzie, Okot Barbra, M.K. Erykah and Larrisah's of this world. On a good day, the A1 defense can really chock a pretty lethal offense. However, this season has been strange if i may say.

Offensively, we are hoping that Irakoze Doreen will be more precise from the on-set in her execution when attacking the basket, Bazira Liz can stay out of foul trouble and torment the Canons defense, Mariam will continue in her relentless driving-in efforts which she has been known for, Mulwana Olivia and Barbra can bring their A-game in the shooting aspect, and with Khisa Mary, Kyomugisha Gloria knitting the game plan together, we wait to see what end-picture the painters' brush will sketch out after the final whistle.

Still Out:

Sylvia- academic commitments
Bagiire Dorcas- long illness
Lokidi Angellah- broken ankle injury among others.

The A1 Challenge team which made it in the finals last season, have failed to make it to the play-offs this season and are cleaning up the closets and preparing mentally and entirely as a whole for the next season, as they seek to lay a more stable foundation.

A1 Challenge Crumbles Before Nabisunsa Girls 42 : 53

On an afternoon of mixed feelings, Team A1 Challenge approached Nabisunsa Girls who themselves were fresh from upsetting Magic Stormers the previous week convincingly.

Nabisunsa led by Chemutai Joy and Ashaba Ruth, were completed with Agnes, Sharon and Lillian which combination has formed a pretty solid unit with a relentless work rate and were surely seeking to finishing their second round with a resounding gong.

A1 Challenge themselves hadn't been in action for two weeks having last seen off Makerere Cubs, and a little rust was showing in their offensive precision as they attacked the basket.

Case in point is A1 Challenge Centre Irakoze Doreen who struggled to establish herself in the first two quarters though she quickly recovered in the consequent quarters.

Okot Barbra was by far one of the better players on the day, lethal in her shooting accuracy and relentless in her defensive approach to the game. Though mother fate had her clash with one of the umpire's Brian for one of the many controversial calls on the day.

One of his calls saw him give Bazira Liz a foul which Kyomugisha Gloria had committed and that saw her fouled out for the fourth game in the second round with 3 points to her name, one of her lowest personal scores this entire season.

Chemutai Joy's continued resilience as she made the A1 Challenge defensive of Fredrickah, Barbra, Kyomugisha Gloria and Larrisah think hard as they tried to stop her and Ashaba Ruthie.

With Liz and Carol ejected controversially, Coach Hamza Nyambogo was totally infuriated by the umpire's decisions and decided to call off the entire team, threatening a forfeit which would see A1 Challenge docked of points from their first round win against Nabisunsa and see Nabisunsa Girls gain the points from the same fixture in the first round where they were lymphatically beaten 67:39.

The approximately 3 minute stand-off was pre-maturely called off by Coach Hamza Nyambogo as he let the ladies finish the game which ended 42 : 53 in favor of Nabisunsa Girls.

This victory see's the Nabisunsa outfit seeking to finish their second round with four straight wins if they can see off the Crane High ladies this Sunday, Makerere University courts at 13:30 hours. And if they are to build on this confidence a 4 in 0 record isn't a far fetched thought or is it?

Team A1 Challenge re-group as soon as possible as they prepare for their final game of the season against the high riding Lady Canons who are having a pretty decent season. With their players looking good and in great form, ready for the play-offs; this will be no walk in the park if Team A1 seek to spoil the party in the Lady Canons camp. Akinyi Lorraine, Maureen Amoding, Brendah Mbone and company all relishing this tie as they get themselves physically and mentally prepared for the play-offs.

Next Game:
A1 Challenge vs UCU Lady Canons [13th Nov] at 4pm

Scoring

Okot Barbra ----10 points
Irakoze Doreen----10 points
Khisa Maria ---6 points

+Defensively aggressive in picking the rebounds
+More accurate in free throw point shooting
+Mobility-run the clock down and not take the foot off the pedal-body language
+Work/fight for each other
+Have faith in each other and constantly encourage each other because in the face of adversity you'll need each other.

Nabisunsa Relishing Their Chances Against A1 Challenge After Defeating Stormers Last Sunday

The FUBA fixtures present A1 Challenge with their last two games of the regular season against Nabisunsa and UCU Lady Canons which is supposedly on the last day of the season.

Team A1 Challenge has to maximize the points, though they are out of the play-off qualification slots, they could probably spoil the party for the UCU Lady Canons-just a little bit i'm thinking.

But a part of me is afraid they will just quickly be looking for the end of the season no matter how they end it, which is really the sum of the A1 Challenge season....disappointing.

This Saturday, A1 Challenge face Nabisunsa who are fresh from beating Magic Stormers, and are relishing their chances come Sunday.

But it's not going to be easy since its not like the mean-spirited A1 defence is going to lie down and let the Nabisunsa offense tickle them.

So while Ashaba Ruth and Chemutai Joy orchestrate an A1 Challenge upset, Barbra Okot, Fredrikah, Larresah, Kyomugisha Gloria,Mugasha Carol will be looking to set up a mean wall of defense-that's totally depending on whom Coach Nyambogo Hamza deems fit to start the game courtesy of their mental and physical preparedness.

All the players the last time i checked are fit and ready to play except the long term injury to Angie Lokidi and the long illness of Dorcas Bagiire.

Sylvia too won't be available because of the academic commitments.

Otherwise great game y'all.

Peace
Kay

A1 Challenge See Off The Makerere Cubs 47 : 15

The inconsistency in the regular season may have cost Team A1 Challenge a place in the play-offs this time around especially after seeing the "cinderella" season the Magic Stormers have had this time around.

Yea...despite the convincing walloping of a Makerere Cubs side that is yet to register its first win of the season, Team A1 Challenge have failed to consistently squeeze the much needed run of wins.

Team A1 Challenge has been blowing hot and cold all season. case in point is their blowing a 10 point lead in their game against the Magic Stormers on the 8th October afternoon. And this is just one of the many cases being raised.

Another being the lack of confidence shown especially when chasing a game: case in point is the Makerere Sparks game in the second round where they lost by a single point.

Barbra Okot mentioned that despite the win, they struggled alot in game. Inotherwords the score board flattered alot and wasn't a true representation of what happened on the court.

Coming against Nabisunsa this Saturday afternoon is one hell of an ask especially after the high school side saw off Magic Stormers in their game last Sunday and are oozing in confidence.

Their work rate is seemingly getting better as the regular season draws to an end. Previously making KIU Rangers sweat real hard for their win and then putting Magic Stormers to the sword. They look in good shape.

With the industriousness of Chemutai Joy who has been their main threat offensively, and probably the return of Ashaba Joy they seem to be a handful.

If one thing is clear Team A1 Challenge need to re-invent their dynamics to be title contenders next season.

Other results from the weekend:

KIU Titans 55:51 UCU Canons
Nabisunsa 76:55 Magic Stormers
Crane High ladies 51:47 Gladiators
M.Shooters 90:30 UPDF

A1 SEEK TO BEAT UP ON MAKERERE CUBS

A1 Challenge welcome back Irakoze Doreen who has been ill for a while and has had to sit out a number of their games.

Having to come back from a defeat to a Rukia Meme' inspired Magic Stormers last weekend, this clash against Makerere Cubs couldn't come at a better time.

All i can see is Makerere Cubs had better prepare themselves for a backlash in as far as A1 Challenge is concern.

The whole team has been training hard and emphasis on tightening up afew loose ends in the defense and precision in the offense.

A1 Challenge defense have to watch out for Kalanguka Kaka Hannah who has been quite inspirational for the Makerere Cubs.

All players seem ready to go and are relishing this tie.

Squad: Irakoze Doreen, Bazira Liz, Khisa Marie, Mulwana Olivia, Okot Barbra, Larresah, Maria, Fredrikah, Mugasha Carol, Kyomugisha Gloria have been confirmed.

Missing still in the squad is Dorcas Bagiire who is off thanks to a long illness, and Angie Lokidi who is still recovering from the broken ankle she sustained earlier on in the second round.

Also Slyvia is off on academic commitment seeing that she's soon sitting her UNEB examinations.

I guess all thats left to say is have a great game and all the best tomorrow.

MAGIC STORMERS LEAVE A1 DEJECTED 41:37

On a day when hopes were a little high and consistency was being sought, A1 Challenge faced Magic Stormers a rejuvinated side which just might be the surprise package in the play offs.

With their star player Sylvia Rukia Meme at it again, the collective hussle play and hard work from the start to the finish has literally seen Magic Stormers rise to a side oozing with confidence and leaving whoever their facing contemplating...

Most attention on this day was focused on the 2012 AFCON qualifier at Namboole where the Uganda Cranes face the Kenyan Harambee Stars.

Doesn't matter where the focus was if you are an A1 Challenge fan either way disappointment loomed all over.

Magic Stormers won 41:37

KIU Titans 58: 57 Miracle Eagles
Falcons 71: 61 UCU Canons

A1 CHALLENGE PREPARE FOR A CRUNCHING TIE AGAINST MAGIC STORMERS ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON

The last time these two teams clashed, Magic Stormers came into the game as under dogs but at the end of the game, Magic Stormers actually out-played and out-scored A1 Challenge 54:41 to end the first round in mid-August.

Players to watch out for in the Magic Stormers are Sandra and Rukia Meme whose work rate and fighting spirit has been one of the central strong points for Magic Stormers.

A1 Challenge got back back to winning ways last Sunday when they played against Gladiators comfortably beating them. If Khisa Marie, Larressah would replicate the form they were in, then we are in for one heck of a good game.

Carol Mugasha is back from official duty and featured in their win against the Gladiators which gives them a little more depth defensively.

Sylvia is not likely to feature because of her academic commitments.

Irakoze Doreen should be fit and ready to play having recovered from illness and sat out the Gladiators game.

Missing in action is Angie Lokidi is still out following her nasty ankle injury in one of the earlier games.
Dorcas Bagiire is also out still recovering from chest illness and most likely won’t be featuring in this game.

Otherwise most of the squad remains the same.
Khisa Marie, Mulwana Olivia, Kyomugisha Gloria, M. Fredrikah, Irakoze Doreen, Mugasha Carol, Okot Barbra, Bazira Liz, Larressah, Lillian, Maria.

A1 Trounce Gladiators 69 : 25 To Breathe Life Into The Pursuit For A Play Off Slot.

On a rainy afternoon, A1 Challenge came back from their bad start to the second round to beat the struggling Gladiators and get their play offs pursuit campaign back on track.

The match played on the KIU court because of the on-going graduation ceremony this weekend in the YMCA wasn't a hinderance because of the stakes that this game rode upon.

Excellent offensive movement and penetration from Khisa Marie and adorable defensive perfomance from Larresah.

A much improved side and a great result for Team A1 Challenge.

More details on the player scorings will come later.

Next Fixture: Magic Stormers vs A1 Challenge [Next Week]

MAKERERE SPARKS 48 A1 CHALLENGE 47

After a defeat last week to KIU Rangers, one would think that Team A1 Challenge's aggression in the Game would be from the on set. Nah, there were aspects of their game that were a little loose, like defensively, Larretah and Liz struggled for a while defensively in their partnership.

However, as the quarter wore out they settled and had great blocks and steals too which spurred them on for a good run for some time in the game.

First quarter ending 10:8 in favor of Team Sparks, said alot. One that it was going to be a hussle till the final whistle.

Makerere Sparks led from the start to the finish which goes to show consistency and resilience from the ladies from the university. [10:8, 21:15,32:23,48:47]

The wits of Karungi Charlyn and her team mate Hellen's work rate and conversion too helped the Sparks make life real hard for the A1 Challenge team.

Much as the Sparks led from start to finish they were made to sweat for this win, especially in the 3rd and 4th quarter, where Coach Hamza called upon the experience and composure of Mulwana Olivia to mark out Winnie whose 3-point shooting was killing them, a strategy which worked out fine, thumbs up to the technical bench, leading to Winnie's eventual substitution.

Another factor worth hinting is the shooting prowess of Okot Barbra which for some reason she hasn't been executing-probably because of the role she has been made to play. Very impressive shooting Barbra though when things are tight the body language can be "oba" not good.

Overall the defensive pairings Fredrikah, Liz, Larretah,Olivia and Barbra was great
Talk Points:

Bazira Liz accumulated 4 fouls which i think was a hinderance to her free-flowing game. She had a fairly good game offensively, but defensively apart from her transitional speed she was good. Scoring a total of 10 points, the question everyone was asking is why didn't they let her shoot her free throws at the near end of the game especially after she had been shooting all day long in the free throw mark? Instead the technical bench substituted her for Olivia who unfortunately missed both shots hence they went on to lose by one point.

Great team work shown by Team A1 Challenge, both defensively and offensively especially in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Question is can we start playing with that grit, so that there's consistency in the game from start to finish-hence no loop holes for the "if we had,..."

Defensively, more solidity is being asked especially in picking up the rebounds because honestly, that was another area where Team A1 Challenge was punished for being sloppy.

Lastly alittle belief and confidence in yourselves and your ability. Honestly if one saw the overall body language of the two teams from without, it was evident who believed in themselves and who didn't.

TEAM SPARKS TEAM A1 CHALLENGE

Karungi Charlyn-10pts Bazira Liz-10pts
Hellen -11pts Maria -9pts
Winnie -11pts Okot Barbra-10pts

A1 CHALLENGE FACES MAKERERE SPARKS

These two teams come face to face, one off a huge defeat and the other breathing with confidence.

A1 Challenge need to up their performance since its pretty clear that they are staring the table from the wrong end of the table.
As for Makerere Sparks, their performance says it all, the fight and focus this team is showing can only be play-off material. Whether or not they consistently show up waits to be seen.

With Angellah Lokidi out injured, Carol Mugasha not available, Kikaazi Carol not available, the rest of the A1 Challenge side is intact.

How well A1 Challenge respond to the defeat against KIU Rangers defeat waits to be seen.

Kick off is at 4pm

ITS STEP UP TIME FOR A1 CHALLENGE IF PLAY-OFFS ARE TO BE REALIZED, HAVING BEEN BEATEN BY KIU RANGERS 64:43 AT YMCA

A1 Challenge coming off a lymphatic 80:29 thumping of Amazon Rhinos would cause one to think that the woos especially as they came to the end of the first round had been put to rest, but no you would be thoroughly mistaken.

A1 Challenge came face to face with a thoroughly rejuvinated KIU Rangers side who were oozing confidence and ready for a fight.

Angellah Lokidi was welcomed back into the squad after sitting out the first round, as for Mugasha Carol wasn't available since she's abroad on official duty.

Malena Rassman, the German who was on loan, went back after her loan period expired. And its clearly evident her great ball handling skills, shooting and relentless work ethic is being missed.

To the game propa:

The first quarter was tight and low scoring as both teams were cagy and taking precaution with no side wanting to open up, however Team A1 Challenge was slow on picking up their defensive rebounds which at the end of the game was one of the areas they were outsmarted.
With the quarter ending 9:5 in favor of KIU Rangers, it was clear that this was going to be a closely contested game.

As for the mid-quarter action between the second and third quarter, KIU Rangers capitalised on their great shooters on the day and the fast breaks. It should be noted that their transitional play was key to the score board, because time and again, the A1 Challenge defense was consistently caught off-guard. With the third quarter ending 47:31, Judith, Jacquei, Slyvia and Moureen of Team KIU Rangers linked up so well both defensively and offensively and one could sense the belief in their camp, having had a great run in form, this 2011-2012 season, with the play-offs not far from their reach if they continue in this rich form.

Things went from bad to worse went Angie Lokidi got a bad knock, which saw her limp off out of the court. We don't know how long she will be off but she was settling fairly well coming in the centre a position she played pretty well last season.

And Liz Bazira fouled out summed it up for Team A1 Challenge

With Larretah and Doreen, being alternated alot by Coach Hamza, one is left wondering how exactly the substituional strategy will work out for them, seeing that the haven't really played for a while on court. Whether its an issue on match-fitness, we have no idea.

However, one thing has to be said, Doreen has to become alittle tough because against teams like KCC Leopard and Magic Stormers plus afew other boogy sides, won't let her play her graceful free flowing basketball.

As for Larretah, she just needs to settle down and be clinical in her offensive conversion rate.

In the A1 Challenge team, especially in positions where there are quite a number of players vying for playing time, when given an opportunity to play, the ladies ought to take it by the throat and shine.

A little worry is the substitution strategy of Coach Hamza, some have found it alittle worrying, which can't eventually kill off the little team spirit on match day.

Having said that, there are wrongs that need to be put right, especially cover for Liz' Bazira's role. When Liz is off, it's so evident. The presence and awareness she brings to the team is huge and when she's off the conversion burden is on the Point Guard which most times is too much of a burden for Khisa Mary or Mulwana Olivia depending on who Coach Hamza or Bazira deem fit to start with.

Defensively, A1 Challenge keep looking solid, with Okot Barbra, Fredrikah being outstanding, not forgetting Carol Mugasha who completes the trio. Having said that, another unused asset for Hamza both offensively and defensively is Slyvia who is an all round player and with alot of time on her side, her game surely will get better.

Bazira Liz lead on the A1 Challenge points with 21 points to her name, though that wasn't enough to save Team A1 Challenge.

In other related news, Makerere Sparks saw off sturbborn Nabisunsa in a closely contested game in the Makerere grounds 49:44.

DMark Power last evening beat Charging Rhinos 107:65, as Slyvia Kaweesa lead the Magic Stormers past Amazon Rhino's scoring a game high 30 points.

Magic Stormers Stun A1 Challenge 54 : 41 To End The First Round of The FUBA Fixtures

Sandra and Meme Sylvia Rukia were in stunning form on Saturday when the two clubs faced off in the last encounter before the FUBA mid-season break.

The resilience that the Magic Stormers camp has shown in the past couple of games may see them through to the play-offs if they continue in the same sparkling form.

It was an emotionally draining game for Malena who was playing her last game before she flies back to her home club, and yet her character and game-handling skills are most definately going to be missed.

The A1 Challenge camp showed a total lack of composure and their more experienced players couldn't carry them when they needed them.

With Bazira Liz and Malena fouled out, Kyomugisha Gloria struggling and Olivia Mulwana benched consistently, the fighting guts and wits of Magic Stormers is becoming a story worth following.

One of the un-sang hero's in the Magic Stormers camp is their coach who has managed to lift up the attitudes of their star players and eventually lift up their game. This is quickly becoming a cinderella story.

As for A1 Challenge, confidence in themselves should be the first wound to treat. With players like Okot Barbra, Fredrikah, Bazira Liz and young stars like Slyvia, a little more self-discovery and team work/ geling would see them rise high.

Their newly big men signings have to raise their games , the likes of Larretah and Doreen .I. have to step up, because when Bazira Liz aint on court, the void is evident.

Taking nothing from Doreens game, she is effective in her offensive point conversion rate but that character and work ethics that Liz brings to the team is an attribute she ought to consider perfecting.

Larretah will slowly need to gain her fitness and Dorcas too following her recovery from sickness.

For now A1 Challenge are placed at sixth on the FUBA table a position which is unfamiliar by their standards. We hope that during the break, they can right their wrongs and prove to us all why they deserve bragging rights in the FUBA ladies category.

Otherwise have a nice break.

Peace

Magic Stormers In The Moods For A1 Challenge

The final games of the first round FUBA fixtures are going to be played this weekend and one team that is really looking to finish on a high is Magic Stormers well known for their resilience and character.

Well, they have a chance to make it rain in the YMCA courts when they come face to face with A1 Challenge who themselves are nursing their bruised ego following a beating from the KIU Rangers team.

Question being asked is can Sylvia rally her team-mates psychologically and beat the A1 Challenge team.

As for A1 Challenge have been struggling on confidence since the defeat to KIU Rangers and if they are going to put up a show, then they have to work together and click.

Malena unfortunately won't be with them for long since this is going to be her last game in the A1 Challenge outfit because her loan spell has come up to an end.

And yes if you ask me she is surely going to be missed especially that ball handling skill and great anticipation and vision, but they have done it before and the rest of the team will have to cope and fill in for the void that she'll leave.

Having said that, the rest of the team is pretty intact and good to go.

Game is at 5:30 so see y'all on court.

In a later game Miracle Eagles also known as the "Big Spenders" will be tasked with defeating Obedi's team Ndejje University Angels in the latter game.

Peace,
Kay

A1 Challenge's Perfect Run Dented By A Resilient KIU Rangers 50 : 64

The perfect month or so was thrown out of the window when KIU Rangers came around. In their second last fixture of the first round A1 Challenge struggled from the start and the KIU Rangers unit made sure there was no talk of a come back, by punishing their every mistake.

Un-necessary turn overs and a not-so-good rotation system had them pay dearly.

Elizabeth Baziira scored a futile 22 points and picked 10 boards but still that was not good enough for the A1 Challenge. However, the players despite this defeat are still upbeat that something good is going to come out of it.

A1 Challenge face Magic Stormers this weekend and this is going to be a stern test for the depth, experience and resilience of the ladies.

Lots of people keep saying that the A1 Challenge bench has no experience whatsoever and with defeats like this which expose the voids, they just might be right.

However, great composure by Mulwana Olivia, Bazira Liz and a much improved Carol Mugasha whose shooting abilities are gettring better by the day.

Bagiire Dorcas didn't feature due to illness.

Its back to the drawing board as they seek to get back to winning ways against Magic Stormers this week which is really going to be a test of their nerves since the Magic Stormers have been likened for their "resilient-hussle" play.

See you laters as we round up the first chapter of the 2011-2012 FUBA fixtures.

Peace,
Kay

A1 Challenge Stroll Past Amazon Rhinos 70:20 Final Score

Saturday evening saw Amazon Rhino's attempt to dent A1 Challenge's great run so far. With the likes of Jacquei, Aisha and Catherine mentally prepared to give it their all which was evident in the warm ups.

But when the whistle was blown, A1 Challenge was quick in their execution offensively and applied the full court press which the seemingly frail moments of team work by the Amazon Rhino unit couldn't break through.

Its no wonder the first quarter ended 30:7. And from the looks of things it was going to be a long day for the Amazon Rhino team.

But the second and third quarter saw A1 Challenge take their foot off the pedal in as far as scoring is concerned, as Coach Hamza Nyambogo had the luxury of swapping his whole team at one point and bringing on another new bench of five other players.

Something which was lacking in the Amazon Rhino team which had to play their entire first quarter with no substitutes. The only two substitutes came late, just at the end of the first quarter. So yes, you are right one of the reasons for their loss is the limited depth among others.

This win was quite encouraging for Coach Hamza Nyambogo because it took a whole team effort to rise up and score collectively, especially considering they were missing a number of their experienced players like; Bazira Liz, Mulwana Olivia ,Kyomugisha Gloria, Larretah, Lillian and Carol Kkz.

They welcomed back to the squad Jacqueline and Barbra who were absent when the played against Nabisunsa Girls School. Eventually, Barbra and Sylvia formed a good-partnership as the game wore away and managed to successfully see off the Amazon Rhinos.

Players who featured; Melissa, Khisa.M, Mugasha Carol, Jacqueline, Baziira Dorcas, Sylvia, Larretah, Dorren Irakoze, Barbra Okot and Fredrickah

Positives:
--Improved team performance
--Carol Mugasha improved shooting

Score Board:

A1 Challenge:

--Melissa--11 points
--Barbra Okot--12 points
--Irakoze Doreen--8 points
--Khisa Mary--8 points
--Larretah--9 points

Amazon Rhino:

--Catherine--7 points
--Aisha--12 points

A1 Challenge Up Against Amazon Rhinos @ 5:30pm

The round one fixtures are a call away and these two clubs clash later on today to squeeze out points for different reasons.

Amazon Rhino are all out to jump out of the other half of the ladies FUBA table well as A1 Challenge is all out to consolidate on its top table finish.

Stiff competition awaits in the likes of KCC Leopards and UCU Lady Canons later on in the second round.

But first this hurdle has to be jumped and then preparations for the second round fixtures can get underway.

A1 Challenge team welcome back their Point Guard, Kyomugisha Gloria who was out in their game last week against Nabisunsa Girls. Otherwise the rest of the team remains the same.

Absent from the game are Carol Kkz and Mulwana Olivia who both have personal engagements to take care of which leaves Khisa Mary and Kyomugisha Gloria to lead the team on.

Bazira Liz and Irakoze Doreen are in the squad, Carol Mugasha, Fredrikah, Sylvia, Bagiire Dorcas and Lillian to mention but a few.

Speaking with a rejuvinated Bagiire Dorcas who promised to give her all against the game when called upon by Coach Hamza Nyambogo, because if her last weeks performance was anything to go by, it left a lot to be desired.

Match kick off is at 5:30pm today.
Stay in touch for the post match analysis.

A1 Challenge Rally Past A Sturbbon Nabisunsa Outfit To A 67:39 Victory

NABISUNSA GIRLS 39:67 A1 CHALLENGE

With notable absentees like Kyomugisha Gloria and Barbra Okot among others A1 Challenge managed to rally passed a resilient Nabisunsa Girls outfit on Saturday evening.

Bazira Liz went all out in the offense as she took it all out. Amassing 19 points for the A1 Challenge. Doreen amassed 14points as Carol Mugasha got 10 points to help the A1 Challenge come out strong eventually.

With Sylvia and Doreen gaining confidence as the season round one fixtures come to an end, this only comes in handy for them.

Question being asked right now how will they fare against their competitors like say; Lady Canons, KCC Leopards and Makerere Sparks because that will be the determinant to sealing the championship at the end of the season.

Chemutai Joy amassed 16 points for the Nabisunsa Girls but it was a case of too little to late. But if there is one player in the Nabisunsa Girls who made a statement it was her and her point guard Ashaba Ruth who kept stringing passes and nice dribbles throughout the game.

Chemutai Joy came up with a big moment when she gunned a three pointer from almost the centre court mark, sparking cheers all round the fans.

Check out the detailed copy later on for more post match reactions from players and stats.

A1 Challenge Faces Tricky Opponents In KIU Rangers Next

If there was a word to describe this season for the A1 Challenge ladies it would be nothing short of team-work effort and i mean this both offensively and defensively.

Yes they lost quite a number of players in the off-season from Viola, Wiltshere Dorothy (to Makerere Sparks), Hatima Kassim (who was MVP for the regular season and their top scorer), Mavita Ali and Namayega Josephine (to KCC Leopards) to mention but a few.

However the team has continued to gel and incorporate the new transfers in Lillian (who is a little sluggish but do not be deceived coz she has a wickedly good jump shot), Sylvia (who is an asset defensively and is a great transitional player) Doreen who and Larretah who they got from KIU Rangers apparently and they are settling pretty well.

Speaking with Barbra Okot today morning, she mentioned how they are definitely going to play a man-to-man defensive strategy for the most part, then downsize to a 3-2 defence at some point in the game.

She was quick to add the fact that the game with KIU Rangers won't be that easy so they have to start seriously and hussle hard from the go, not like how they approached the Makerere Sparks game too them for granted.

Attacking offence-give and go in otherwords quick transitional play from the defense to offensive mode in a flash giving the opposition defense little time to assemble. The new signings r still settling in.

A1 Challenge have a new player who transfered from Germany and is around for 2months. Her club has cleared her to play. She has great ball-handling and is athletic with a pretty good shot.

But do not be deceived because KIU Rangers have a never die spirit, they are a force to reckon with over the years, as they too try to work up their way to the play-offs.

This i reckon is going to be a spectacle for the average basketball fan.

Stay In touch.....Peace.

A1 Run Over Lady Bucks 70 : 19 on Sunday Evening

During the warm-ups, the players were excited and looking ready. The depth of the A1 Challenge squad was evident as they totally out-numbered the Lady Bucks side who just had one substitute player available after the starting five.

By the end of the end of the 1st quarter the score sheet was 13-0 in favor of A1 Challenge. And by the start of the 2nd quarter, Olivia's patience and firm ball handling as well as awareness gave an edge them an edge of brilliance over their opponents the Bucks whose turn-over rate and lack of sharpness in their conversion rate was worrying.

A1 Challenge kept resting their players as they brought on fresh legs like Bridget and Lillian and Sylvia who played really well defensively giving Liz, Carol and Barbra Okot to rest and freshen up for later. Bridget came and took over defensive responsibilities with a couple of steals to officially release Olivia to play more on the forward role where her sharpness proved lethal.

With Carol playing really well especially in the transitional role and releasing a couple of defense splitting passes, she looked like she was having the game of her life.

The score was 47:7 by the third quarter, and Khisa Mary and Gloria Kyomugisha are put on to emphasize urgency in both offense and defense. By this time the Bucks had nothing to lose. It was just a matter of salvaging some pride by putting a couple of more points on the score sheet.

Gloria, Slyvia, Lizzie interlinking beautifully and stabbing the Lady Bucks defense real hard.

By the end of the final whistle, A1 Challenge well won the Lady Bucks 70:19.

Seeking to finish hard by the end of the first round, they seem to be doing fairly well so far.

Well won ladies.

Bazira Liz amassed 22points to lead the assault against the Lady Bucks.

See you on Friday 8th as KIU Rangers host the A1 Challenge and Falcons host DMark Power.

A1 Challenge Run Riot Against Lady Bucks 70:19

Lady Bucks a team that has been guilty of living in the shadows of its past glory had a chance to salvage some pride as the round one fixtures come to a end.

Once known as the Queens of female basketball in Uganda, Lady Bucks couldn't string basic passes together later on finish off the baskets. It was quite a poor and disappointing display from the Lady Bucks.

And the limited depth in the bench is another of the many factors that were indicators of an empire that has collapsed.

First quarter ending 13:0 left a lot to be desired as once again Bazira Liz led the scoring for A1 Challenge with 21 points to her name.

Lets just say A1 Challenge outrun, out muscled and outsmarted Lady Bucks from start to finish.

Check us out for match details and post match commentary from the A1 Challenge team.

Great win ladies.

A1 Challenge Re-Group For Lady Bucks on Sunday Evening

Former power house Lady Bucks, a team that has gone through the ride and tides of time, is on the spot light again as they aim to frustrate A1 Challenge's good finish to the round one games.

Having narrowly edged Makerere Sparks in their previous game, all concentration is going to be set on the 5 o'clock game against the sturbborn opposition of the Lady Bucks.

Most of the players in both squads should be fit to play. A1 Challenge, however, have Dorcas Bagiire who wasn't used in their previous game and should be fresh enough to feature.

Otherwise the rest of the starting line-up remains the same if it pleases Coach Nyambogo Hamza.

Match Day: Sunday at 17:00 hrs

A1 CHALLENGE SQUEEZE PAST MAKERERE SPARKS

A1 CHALLENGE 44:42 MAKERERE SPARKS

A1 Challenge narrowly grounded a victory against Makerere Sparks in a game which saw them play unconvincingly as was the case against the Cubs a week ago.

The game saw Wiltshere Dorothy Kabasiima face her former team mates and if that is not an emotional return then i do not know what is.

Sparks started with a bang with all their players approach the game with urgency and hunger and aggressiveness. Dorothy, Hellen, Bridget Kalanguka all working well to make it hard for the A1 Challenge offense to co ordinate as a unit.

And they indeed led for quite a while till about the third quarter when Khisa Mary and Olivia Mulwana led the team to a come back from the dead so to speak.

With the Sparks beginning the game in high gear, the A1 Challenge ladies need the gritty defense of Barbra and the command of Mulwana Olivia who led the comeback "from-the-dead" if i may say.

Olivia with a couple of 3 pointer shots that helped narrow the Sparks lead. The rest was left for the new signings to finish off and give a clear cut reason as to why they were bought by the A1 Challenge Club.

By the end of the fourth quarter, it was too tight to call and clearly you could see how tense the players looked.

They say big moments call for "big players" and it showed when Coach Nyambogo Hamza substituted Lillian, Fredrikah and kept Carol and Barbra towards the end to tighten the grip defensively.

As Kyomugisha Gloria was later brought on to emphasize urgency in the mentality of the players that they wanted nothing short of a win, which they eventually grabbed in the end.

There's a great sigh of relief after the final whistle was blown.

A1 Challenge Prepare To Face Makerere Sparks

As we near the end of round one in the FUBA league, most of the teams are fighting for every single point to ensure a decent finish.

Both these teams face off this evening in the first game and kick-off is at 6:00pm.

A1 Challenge is riding high on confidence following their thumping of Makerere Cubs a week ago.

In a recent word with Coach Nyambogo Hamza, he was modest n said,"This is just another game that we plan to go all out and do our best. I believe the girls are learning alot and getting more comfortable with each other so looking forward to a good game today."

Makerere Sparks hope that their performance will be sparkling following a dismal show in this first round. The last time they were in action was about a fortnight ago, where they crumbled before KIU Rangers.

With alot of preparation and hard work we wait to see how much resistance they will stage against the A1 Challenge offense.

Well known for chocking in the last lap to the end of a game, we all hope that the Sparks camp rights the wrongs and produce a fight today.

With Hellen, Bridget and Charlyn all known for their hardwork, we hope their coach can juggle these talents well and put up a sparkling Sparky game.

A1 Challenge will be delighted to all their options available. Khisa Mary, Mulwana Olivia and Kyomugisha Gloria all fit and looking good to lead the team.

The experience of Vicky comes in handy. And Dorcas Bagiire will also look to contribute in whichever way Coach Hamza deems it fit.

Defensively Mugasha Carol, Barbra Okot and Fredrikah knitting pretty well and the question being asked now is, can they chock the Sparks offense?

Looking good in their transitional game, A1 Challenge will be looking at Bazira Liz to lead them again as they plan to put up a challenge against Sparks. With new signings all settling quick, they look to sting Sparks real hard this evening.

Doreen's work rate is impeccable and Lillian's jump shot in the D area is on-point.

I could go on and on. Action kicks off today at 6:00pm at YMCA courts.

In other related news, the Kyambogo Warriors host the Mountain Dew Falcons in the second game this Friday evening at 8pm.

See you there. Peace

A1 Challenge Trounce Makerere Cubs Leaving Them For Dead

A1 CHALLENGE 92 : 11 MAKERERE CUBS

Two clubs in contrasting positions on the FUBA league table faced off.

A1 Challenge desperate to get back to winning ways after back to back defeats
from UCU Lady Canons and KCC Leopards and Makerere Cubs desperate to break their
losing streak since the season began.

Asking the Makerere Cubs to defeat the A1 Challenge would surely be a tall order.
And if it happened, it would be an early christmas present for the Cubs.

Last years' runners up lit up the court with their full-court press tactics totally chocking the Makerere Cubs defense. Making quick successive points without reply.

A1 Challenge defense led by Mugasha Carol and Okot Barbra stood up tall, limiting the Cubs to a meagre 11 point score.

From the start of the warm-ups, the Cubs players looked like they had already lost psychologically.

The team-work and athleticism are areas where A1 Challenge have put lots of emphasis and though these are early days, fruits can surely be seen.

Bazira Liz led the A1 Challenge score sheet with a total of 23 points as opposed to Makerere Cubs Kalanguka Hana Kaka with 6 points.

As one team went off satisfied with a win, for the other its a question of how long are they to wait to register their first win?

Score Sheet

A1 Challenge

Bazira Liz : 23pts
Fredrikah : 11 pts
Lillian : 11 pts

Makerere Cubs

Hana' Kaka : 6 pts

A1 Seeks To Get Back To Winning Ways Against Makerere Cubs

Following successive defeats against Lady Canons and KCC Leopards, the A1 Challenge Club will this Saturday be seeking to get back to winning ways in a season which has been nothing short of tough.

Most of the players can't wait to atone for the losses against a Makerere Cubs side that has been far from impressive, yet to register a win this season.

Under the leadership of Kyomugisha Gloria, and the ever loyal and dedicated unit that she has working around her, this should be an easy win, no offense to Makerere Cubs.

The Makerere Cubs side is a young side that is yet to make it big in the "big" league. The likes of Hana .K Bolton and company yet have to work together to start functioning as a unit, then match the work rate and skill of the power houses in the ladies basketball league, which is going to be a really tough task.

I know some players who just can't wait for the kick off to make a statement, but i will gladly reserve the details.

Good luck A1 Challenge team: Kyomugisha Gloria, Bazira Lizzie, Barbra Okot, Erykah, Maggie, Carol Mugasha, Carol Kakk'z, Dorcus Bagiire, Freeky Harriet, Betty, Aggie, Olivia Mulwana and Vicky.

Match kick-off is on Saturday 5:30pm YMCA Courts, Wandegeya.

A1 Challenge Battle Crane High In YMCA @ 5:30 pm

Today @ 17:30 hrs, the last years finalists tussle it out with the Crane High ladies in a bid to re-align their campaign following the defeat to the Lady Canons a fort night ago.

As the team continues to gel with the new players in the camp, the morale is seemingly high as this looks to be a straight forward win for the 2005 champions.

Having said that, Crane High can some times mean to be quite a stubborn opponent to face coming this early in the season.

Well with the emphasis on passing, cutting and shooting notwithstanding a hard defensive game, we will wait to see how high they rise.

The loss against Lady Canons is inexcusable. With that said, lack of concentration was the major short fall.

So i guess Crane High should beware of a back lash.

Lady Canons Defeat A1 Challenge as the 2011-2012 Season Begins

A weekend that saw the top guns in the ladies basketball clash again, gave the fans quite a spectacle. Coming from the off-season, with lots of new faces in the squad, Mr. Hamza Nyambogo had a task of balancing the youthful energy and experience to grind out the result he wanted to officially kick start the A1 Challenge season.

However, the Lady Canons had other ideas and a loss was not in their minds. Ms. Akinyi Lorraine saw no signs of missing her colleague Anastacia Njeri gunning a game high 23 points.

With the combination of Ms. Brenda Mbone and Maureen Amoding in prolific form and blistering pace, the A1 Challenge defense had its work cut out. The organization and beautiful leadership of Frances Nabulobi was clearly seen on the court.

Having said that, Barbra Okot was by far the most outstanding player in the A1 jersey working her socks off defensively and closing out the Lady Canons danger man, though she was later substituted in the latter bit of the third quarter.

Not all was blue for the A1 Challenge, because the new signings from KIU Rangers and Crane High with time will sync into the general team game and there's no telling how much trouble they will cause for their opponents.

Also the fact that Liz Bazira is back on court following that nasty broken wrist injury she got in their semi-final win last season, was a good note.
Speaking with her prior to the game she said that its a little stiff but a little more work on it and training, should be good to go.

So Game I , Lady Canons register their first win and its back to the drawing board for the A1 coach Mr. Nyambogo Hamza.

Stay Blessed and stay in touch.
God Bless

A1 Challenge faces UCU Lady Canons in a repeat of last season's final

Season Opener Promises Mouth Watering Action

This is clearly a repeat of the FUBA Lady's final last season, which see's both teams come into a new season with a lot of changes to the squads.

Anastacia Njeri of the Lady Canons off to the States on academic duties which no doubt is bound to be a big miss for them.

However, the 2010 MVP Maureen Amoding should be in pole position to lead her team on as they look to start the season on a positive note.

With a new coach and new recruits the Lady Canons look to gel quick as a unit as they seek to retain their title. Having said that, it's going to be a long season but we wait to see how the other contenders like the KCC Leopards, KIU Rangers and Makerere Sparks seek to raise their game higher to bring on the competition element.

A1 Challenge have a few surprises up their sleeves as we shall see in the squad. Lots of departures too but unlike the Lady Canons, Mr. Nyambogo Hamza remained with the team he led to the final last season.

Without the 2009 MVP Hatima Kassim, they have tried to enter the market seeking possible replacements. Whether it yielded much, we'll wait and see.

The absence of Mavita Ali, Namayega Josephine and Viola will be felt.

But the rest of the team is still intact with the likes of Mulwana Olivia, Khisa Mary, Kyomugisha Gloria as the PGs and Lokidi Angella, Barbra Okot, Mugasha Carol, Dorothy and Maggie.

Bazira Lizzie is out of the injury bench having succumb to a broken wrist during the semi-final play-off victory over the KCC Leopards last season.

Whether or not Mr. Nyambogo Hamza seeks to gel new blood in the squad or stick to his long time faithfuls we all wait to see.

Match day I kicks off at 6:00pm in the YMCA court.

On a similar note, the DMark Power team faces the Miracle Eagles who have been quite busy in the off season. They've with them a totally rich squad if i may say. Norman Blick (from Power), Richard Osano Omondi (Falcons) to join Steve Omony plus the already talented assembly of players.

However Ssentongo Brian, left the Eagles squad to join the Ndejje University Angels.

DMark Power vs Miracle Eagles @ 8:00pm via YMCA courts.

See you there.
